Make Me Dream decision vindicated03/12/2010
Published: 4:34PM Friday March 12, 2010 By racing reporter Phillip Quay Source: ONE Sport The impressive Listed race win by promising three-year-old filly A Chance To Dream (Volksraad x Make Me Dream) at Ellerslie on Wednesday has vindicated the decision by the Hong Kong Breeders Club to retain her yearling half-sister. A Chance To Dream won the Listed Sunline Vase (2100m) in great style and the John Sargent-trained filly is headed for a start in the Group 1 $300,000 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham on March 20, for which she is now the $5 second favourite.
"She's a very good horse when she gets over ground on a good track," trainer John Sargent said. The first time that happened was her last start when she left maiden class by six lengths".
The Sunline Vase has proven to be the most significant lead up race in recent years with the last two winners of the NZ Oaks, Jungle Pocket and Boundless both running in the Ellerslie feature prior to the fillies classic.
The Hong Kong Breeders Club owns the dam of A Chance To Dream, Irish-bred Make Me Dream (by Sadler's Wells), who resides at Hamilton-based Highview Stud. Highview Stud offered a Pins x Make Me Dream yearling filly at the Karaka sales this year but she was passed in.
Highview Stud proprietor Brent Gillovic said the Pins x Make Me Dream filly was an outstanding individual but as Lot 37 she came up very early in the sale.
"Quite frankly I was very surprised she didn't fly past her reserve price of $120,000. A number of offers were fielded for her through the sale but Peter Yip (owner and co-founder of the Hong Kong Breeders Club) stuck to his guns and stood by the reserve," Gillovic said.
"Once she came home we had a chat about her and Peter decided to keep her which looks a very wise decision now. She will be broken in later on and educated and may race as a late two-year-old although the three-year-old classics would seem more her go," he said. Make Me Dream has a Danroad colt on the ground and is back in foal to the Hong Kong Breeders Club owned stallion. |
